METRO OOSTLIJN (2018)

The largest project to date, which encompassed the full redesign of the Amsterdam Metro line East through a tile tableau for signage, creating a recognisable link between the stations, and strengthening the identity of the line as a whole.

The basic idea behind the tile tableau is that they are linguistic images. I wanted to make illustrations that are ideographic: the meaning is not equivocal. Instead, your personal interpretation of the meaning represents an idea.” (René Knip)

The main alphabet is based on a matrix of seven horizontal rows of tiles. In total there are 20 different tile designs that are used to create all letters and shapes throughout the stations.
